WCBR North Central #2 / went down at Malibu! Northern LA took the event win and Huntington Beach took second while winning the season! Huntington Beach moves on to defend the Wheat Cup at Lowers on April 23rd.
Congratulations to the “first-year club” @northernlaboardriders for a huge home-court win at the final WCBR North Central qualifying event ASHOC@MALIBU!! They beat the champs @hb.boardriders with an impressive show of local talent throughout the entire day!
But what it came down to was the end of the day and all the way to the LAST MINUTE. Although NLA and HB battled throughout the day for first, with NLA in the lead for most of the second half of the day, HB clawed back the lead with Team Captain and Head Coach @brettsimpson double whammy-ing a “9” and 20’s @mattpassa_ double whammy-ing an “8” to bring HB back in the lead. The crowd on the beach was going absolutely crazy.
With less than a minute left NLA needed a 5.9 to win.. a very tall order for an extremely inconsistent day. And holy moly- here comes a set and it was a good one! With the announcers counting down, the 4th and last surfer for NLA, Ryder Sturgis with priority locked into the first wave of miracle set- and the goofy-footer CRUSHED it. HB’s Jack Boyce was on the 2nd wave of the set and he was on fire too… but it wasn’t enough- Northern LA Board Riders @isntryder hammers down a 6.9 to beat the #champs by 1.3 points and take the win at the hooter… “It was E P I C”.
The first-year Northern LA Boardriders Club is going to the WCBR Wheat Cup Finals!
What an amazing accomplishment; congratulations @dillonperillo and all of the club captains and LA organizers for hosting this instant classic event. And thanks to @allen_salro for the water patrol! Although HB took second place, they clinched first place overall for the region and also secured their spot at #thewheatcup at Lowers! Seal Beach Board Riders took third place and had some incredible surfing from @chassacre scoring an 8.5 and @ryansimmons1374 taking home the MVP for their club. @southbayboardriders fought a tough fight all day with extremely good surfing from crowd favorites Dickie Oreilly, Shaun Burrell, Matt Pagan, and Noah Hill who all crushed it.
We will see you at Lowers for the Wheat Cup Finals on April 21st, 22nd and 23rd !
